Choosing a Dog Bed for Hip Dysplasia: What to Look For
| Feature | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Base | A thick, supportive base rather than a thin pad; a topper over a hard floor is not the same thing |
| Size | Long enough for your dog to stretch out fully; measure them lying down |
| Edges | Low enough to step over easily, with no high rim to climb |
| Cover | Removable and machine washable |
| Position | Warm and draught-free, away from slippery floor routes |
A bed does not treat hip dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a condition your vet diagnoses and manages. A bed cannot treat it, but a supportive bed can make resting more comfortable. Ask your vet about weight management, exercise and any treatment before you shop.
Depth and support
A dog with sore hips often finds a thin, worn bed uncomfortable. Look for a thick, supportive base, and check how the foam behaves when you press it. Our guide to memory foam density explains what the numbers mean.
Size and shape
Measure your dog lying down, from nose to base of tail, and add a little room. Dogs with sore hips often like to stretch out, so a bed that cramps them is not a kindness. Our measuring guide and printable sheet help.

Getting on and off
A high bolster can be hard to step over. Choose edges your dog can manage comfortably and put the bed where they do not need to cross a slippery floor to reach it.
Our beds
Our Classic Orthopaedic Memory-Foam Bed has a 9cm memory-foam base and a removable, washable cover. Our Round Comfort Bed is a soft bed with a raised rim, not an orthopaedic one, so we suggest the memory-foam bed for dogs who sleep stretched out.
