How to measure your dog

A one-page sheet for beds, ramps, harnesses, paw socks and raised bowls. Print it, measure twice, and write the numbers down.

1. Bed

  1. Have your dog lie fully stretched out on their side, the way they sleep when relaxed.
  2. Measure from nose to tail tip along the floor.
  3. Add 15 to 20cm so they can stretch without legs hanging over the edge.
  4. Compare with the bed's listed length and width. Don't rely on S/M/L alone.

Nose to tail tip: ______ cm   + 15-20cm = ______ cm

2. Ramp or steps

  1. Measure from the floor to the top of the surface (boot lip, sofa seat, bed). Park the car on level ground, loaded as usual.
  2. Note your dog's weight and leave a margin below the product's weight rating.
  3. Work out the slope: angle = asin(height ÷ ramp length), or use our ramp angle calculator.

Height: ______ cm   Dog's weight: ______ kg

3. Harness

  1. Have your dog stand square, all four feet on the floor.
  2. Wrap the tape around the chest just behind the front legs, at the widest part of the ribcage.
  3. Snug, but loose enough to slide two fingers underneath.

Chest: ______ cm

4. Paw socks

  1. Stand your dog square on a sheet of paper on a hard floor.
  2. While they bear weight, mark the widest points either side of a front paw, then measure between the marks.
  3. Repeat for a hind paw and use the larger number.

Front paw: ______ cm   Hind paw: ______ cm

5. Raised bowls

  1. Stand your dog square and measure from the floor to the point of the shoulder.
  2. The bowl rim should usually sit a little below that, around lower-chest height.

Floor to shoulder: ______ cm

Raised bowls don't suit every dog. If you're unsure, ask your vet.

Between two sizes?

  • Beds and steps: size up.
  • Ramps: choose the longer one.
  • Harnesses: take care, and ask the seller before ordering.
  • Paw socks: try the larger size and check the strap holds.
  • Feeding stands: pick the lower height if in doubt.

Measure twice and write both numbers down. This sheet is general information, not veterinary advice. If your dog has a condition that affects how a product should fit or be used, check with your vet. Full details: How to measure your dog for the right size.
