How High Should a Raised Dog Bowl Be? Measuring Guide

5 min read · General information, not veterinary advice
Our raised feeding stand heights
Stand heightHow to decide
Low: 10cmFor dogs whose elbow height is only slightly above the floor
Medium: 18cmFor dogs between the two other sizes
Tall: 26cmFor dogs who need the bowls much higher; check it does not make them reach upwards

Measure your dog first

Have your dog stand square on a flat floor. Measure from the floor to the point of their elbow, level with the bottom of their chest. Note the number in centimetres.

Our printable measuring sheet has a space for it.

Match the measurement to a stand

The goal is a bowl rim that lets your dog eat with their neck in a natural, level position. The stand's height is only part of it: bowls sit a little higher than the stand.

If your measurement falls between two heights, the lower one is usually the safer choice, because a bowl that is too high makes a dog reach upwards.

Does your dog need a raised bowl at all?

Not every dog does. Raised bowls are often chosen for older dogs who find bending uncomfortable, but opinions differ for large and deep-chested breeds, and the debate about bloat is unsettled. Ask your vet before changing how your dog eats. Our guide Should your dog's bowls be raised? covers the arguments.

Introduce it gradually

Put the new stand where the old bowls were, and let your dog eat from it as normal. If they seem unsure, go back to the floor for a few meals and try again. Wipe the stand and wash the bowls daily.

Our raised feeding stand comes in three heights (10cm, 18cm and 26cm), holds two stainless steel bowls and wipes clean.
